🌾 New Yam Festival (Iwa Ji/Iri Ji)
Festival Overview
The New Yam Festival, celebrated annually between August and October, represents far more than a
harvest celebration. It is a renewal of the covenant between our people, our ancestors, and the land
that sustains us. This festival marks the official beginning of the harvest season and serves as a
time of thanksgiving to Chukwu (God) for the bounty of the earth.
Spiritual Significance
Before the new yam can be eaten by anyone in the community, it must first be offered to the ancestors
and blessed by the Uga. This ritual ensures that we honor those who came before us and seek their
continued protection and guidance.
